Some Conservative Christians are very concerned because Liberal and Progressive Christians would like to help the poor and the needy, individually, through charity, as well as through government programs when the need is beyond what any one individual or charity can do. But some Conservatives don’t believe in this and find Progressives anti-God, anti-Biblical, and believe they should be severely reprimanded. It makes me wonder what would happen if the Good Samaritan had to check out a few things before helping. Here’s my take on that story.

I sometimes wonder when Liberation Theology became a dirty word. As the media has continued to harp on Obama’s relationship with his minister, who obviously has done him much good, the topic continually comes up – Wright preaches liberation theology. How awful!

But any Christian who reads their Bible will discover that Jesus’ first mission statement was to liberate.

George W. is going to give us back some money in May – perhaps as much as $300 or $600 or $1,200. He thinks that this will make up for his failed economic policies. But isn’t this similar to a giving a band-aid to a child who needs a $30,000 operation?

George W. is not giving us enough. Maybe he needs to truly pay us what he owes us. Perhaps a letter will explain it to him.

[At the Republican debates on January 24, 2008, Mike Huckabee said that he believed that there probably had been WMDs, but we hadn’t been able to find them, much like some children don’t find an Easter Egg, but that doesn’t mean the egg isn’t there.]

“The job of my battalion was to keep our eyes open, looking for weapons of mass destruction. There must be over 100,000 of us by now in Iraq, and we were determined to find those WMDs which could have been hidden just about anywhere. Whenever we took the tank out, we would start rolling about 20 abreast of each other, across that vast desert. There were always a couple of guys on the side with metal detectors, figuring that maybe those dang things were hidden under the sand. I wasn’t sure that was a good idea, since the whole tank was pretty much made of metal, and figured that they’d come up with a false positive, but I guess we all had to do our part in one way or another. Usually I rode in the front of the tank, peering out with my binoculars, looking for something - I wasn’t sure what. A silo across the desert? A warehouse? Maybe the pointy front of a rocket sticking out of the sand? All of us were committed to finding those WMDs. After all, that’s why we were here, wasn’t it?

Mike Huckabee wants to amend the Constitution so it conforms, more specifically, to The Word of God. This is good news to those of us who believe John 1, which says that The Word of God is Jesus Christ, which means that the U.S. government will start paying more attention to the poor, the needy, widows and orphans, the oppressed, the downcast, those who need healing. If that’s true, we will start working more for Peace, and working to have a more caring society. But we don’t need an amendment to do that. We just need to take seriously the words that define what Government is to do – “to promote the general Welfare.”

But that doesn’t seem to be what Huckabee means. He wants an amended Constitution that fits better with his interpretation of the Bible. This might create some problems that he’ll need to address, once he becomes President.

Newscasters had a range of responses – some were appalled, some shocked, some bewildered, some surprised, some confused, some concerned. All of them felt this was a bad thing!

Bill O’Reilly has been saying that there’s a war on Christmas going on. This has made me very tense, as I’ve tried to find weapons to prepare for the coming battle.

During the various Democratic Party Candidate debates, the Democrats have sounded remarkably uniform in terms of the over-all issues, and, perhaps even more importantly, remarkably respectful of each other. It has not been unusual to hear one candidate say of another, “I agree with what _____ has said, but I would add…” Or, “credit needs to be given to ______ for the work he’s done on this issue.” Or, “We all agree on the basic issues, although we may have different approaches to solving them.” Most of the candidates have been able to deal with issues, without moving into personal attacks. Now that Mike Gravel is gone, the one candidate with an attitude of condescension and arrogance has been eliminated.
