3 Years of War

The world marked the 3rd anniverary of war in Iraq in very somber tones. The political activists took to the streets, impotent to stop the US war machine in Iraq. People who don't consider themselves activists, wondered aloud about the civil war that is happening within Iraq and how the US could extracate ourselves from the quagmire.
The administration continues to live in its self-constructed bubble. Cheney went on the Sunday shows saying the insurgency was caused by terrorists who are desperate...sounds an awful lot like "the insurgency is in its last throes." Apparently Cheney doesn't watch television either. His comments are so out of touch with reality that we see every day. It would be comical, if there weren't people dying.
Bush started his Iraq road show again. Someone in the audience questioned him about why he claimed ties to 9-11 and Iraq. Bush said he never stated that Iraq ordered the attack of 9-11. Okay, but the implication was made time and time again including in the State of the Union address. It was made enough that most Americans in polls believed that there was a connection and the Bush administration said nothing to stop that perception. After 9-11, the terrorism czar has told us that all Bush wanted to hear about was Iraq. Americans believed their leaders and were let down.
Hints of Vietnam abound in all of the chatter. Iraq is a similarly intractable war. Its time we begin to pull out and ask International Peacekeepers to protect the government functions.
3 Years Later - Mission still not accomplished.

There is Hope
If we act.
Last night I participated in a historic concert in New York City conmemorating the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. It is the first of a series of concerts that will happen across the U.S. The goal of these concerts is to benefit Iraq Veterans Against the War and Veterans for Peace, two leading national organizations working to end the war in Iraq and to galivinize a movement. The energy and commitment of those participating in the event was phenomenal. At one point during the concert the audience was asked if they were planning on voting in 2006. To which the audience responded in a resounding "yes".
We are still living in a democracy. If people step up and excercise their right to vote, their right to free speech, their right to reclaim said democracy, I think there is hope.
But the onus is on us. All of us. The time is now for us to lead.
