Carlism and The Catholic Right
In order to understand the extreme elements of the Catholic Right it is important to understand a Spanish political movement known as Carlism. To that end, my series on the Catholic Right continues over at Talk to Action with a discussion of this often overlooked, but influential philosophy. It contains some of the core beliefs that fuels reactionary organizations such Opus Dei and the Institute on Religion and Democracy.
But more importantly, I also ask you to read this extremely important piece by Andrew J. Weaver on the neoconservative Catholics of the aforementioned Institute on Religion and Democracy who are driving much of the socially conservative Bush agenda.
I can only hope that my Carlism piece can compliment this outstanding piece of work. Andrew is not only doing American democracy a huge favor by exposing these elitist theocrats, but also he is sending a wake-up call to both mainstream Protestants and the vast majority of American Catholics. This cancer on my Church must be exposed, discussed and isolated. In short, they are nothing more than Smorgasbord Catholics who are the real folks who pick and choose from Catholic doctrines. And they do so not much as worship God, but seek to render God unto Caesar.
