Defcon takes on William Donohue

In the last week, the national media have allowed religious right leader William Donohue to take to the airwaves, attacking two bloggers recently hired by John Edwards' Presidential Campaign on the grounds that they are "trash-talking bigots."The media have made one major omission, however: Donohue's own history of extreme intolerance.Join us today in calling on our nation's leading news outlets to stop providing Donohue with a soapbox without acknowledging his own prejudiced views. Take action here.Earlier this week Donohue appeared in The New York Times as well as stories by the Associated Press, criticizing both the bloggers in question for promoting intolerance. These print pieces were followed by interviews on CNN and MSNBC. Unfortunately, the media failed to put Donohue and his beliefs in context. In 2004, Donohue stated that, "Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular."In 2006, he compared what he calls the "persecution" of Christians by the "secular supremacists" to apartheid in South Africa. And in July of that same year, Donohue even attacked DefCon for our campaign to defend the hope of embryonic stem cell research. The religious right has long had an open invitation to appear freely on national media without an accurate portrayal of its true beliefs and agenda. It's time this negligence stopped.Sign our petition today, demanding that The New York Times, the Associated Press, CNN and MSNBC stop giving the religious right a free pass and acknowledge William Donohue's own sordid history of trash talking.
