Which child would we ask to go without health coverage?
July 31, 2007
Dear Friend of Children:
Next week Congress begins debate on legislation that would provide health coverage to millions of uninsured low-income children. By any measure these are the least among us, and they need our strength, our leadership, and – most importantly – our voice.
You’d think keeping children healthy would be one goal that everyone in Washington, DC could agree on. But the reality is that our federal officials will not solve the crisis of 9 million uninsured children in the United States without the strong prophetic voice of the faith community.
Please take a few minutes to call your congressional representatives today to tell them to support health coverage for uninsured children.
Call your U.S. Senator and your Congressperson today toll free at 877-367-5235, a free number set up by our friends at the faith-based PICO National Network. The National Council of Churches and Faithful America have worked side-by-side with PICO to remind policymakers that children’s health coverage is a moral issue for America’s faith leaders.
Your Congressperson needs to hear that as a person of faith you believe that no child should go without treatment or depend on an emergency room because they lack insurance.
Tell your Congressperson they should support a strong reauthorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). SCHIP has been a tremendous success, reducing the rate of uninsured children by one-third. Now it needs to be strengthened to reach the millions of low-income children who are still lack coverage.
