Controversial, punchy: our new page for liberal media

The alternative media in America is an important source for news critical of the government's responsibility on issues of poverty, peacekeeping, and racial tensions. We already bring you headlines from mainline news media from the New York Times to the San Jose Mercury, whenever one of them covers issues relating to Christianity. But sometimes -- when we're concerned about fair labor laws, fair trade, prison reform, and the environment -- these dark issues are too controversial to get coverage in the national and local papers of the day.

That's why, in our quest to bring you the very best and most up-to-date reflections on contemporary politics for Christians, we've now set up another great newspage, the Liberal media headlines page.

Every hour, our spiders are scouring the Daily Kos, Counterpunch, PBS NewsHour, The Huffington Post, Slate Magazine, The Nation, Slashdot, Common Dreams, Democracy Now!, and a dozen other alternative media sources, for the articles relating to Christianity, the Religious Right, Morality, and ethical values in America. Expect exposees of the Religious Right's dynamics; expect statistics on how much the war is costing us and how little hard-working Americans are being paid. The reporting will be controversial but solid.

As always, the headlines that are *most* relevant to issues of poverty, racism, and social justice will appear on the left sidebar of our front page (<----) and on the StreamingChristianity page, found by clicking above on the "NEWS" tab.

Just a sampling of the Liberal Media Page's current headlines, to whet your appetite:

  • Fundamentalists against women's health: "In plain view, some of the Christian fundamentalists in this country are arguing against a vaccine that would nearly eliminate cervical cancer. This would save the lives of over 3,000 women in America every year. What kind of barbarians would even consider being against this vaccine?"
-- Cenk Uygar in The Huffington Post: The Religious Right fighting against women's lives
  • Loss of moral compass: "Strong moral values, decency, propriety, and honesty: conservatives long ago declared these ideals essential to their belief system, achieving political ascendancy with promises of restoring honor to a government they view as tainted by liberal immorality and excess.
"A fine notion, indeed, but one question lingers: what happened?"
-- M. Juaaid Alam in Counterpunch: What moral values?
  • Wal-Mart: "Last Tuesday, at the world premiere of Robert Greenwald's Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, SEIU chief Andy Stern declared: "This isn't just the premiere of a movie, it's the premiere of a movement." During the week of November 13 to 19, over 3000 screenings of the film are planned in all 50 states and 19 countries. Throughout "Wal-Mart Week," the two largest groups opposing the retail behemoth's practices, Wal-Mart Watch and Wake Up Wal-Mart, are planning an unprecedented series of actions."

  • The Second Coming: "Whether intentionally or otherwise, dispensationalism is being used today to give theological justification to what the United Nations regards as racism and the denial of basic human rights; supporting the ethnic-cleansing of Palestinians from their historic lands; endorsing the building of Jewish settlements in the Occupied Territories; inciting religious fanaticism by supporting the rebuilding of a Jewish Temple on Mount Moriah; dismissing moderate Jewish opinion willing to negotiate land for peace; and advocating an apocalyptic eschatology likely to become a self-fulfilling prophecy."
-- John Scott on the history of Dispensationalism in the Information ClearingHouse
  • Crooks and cheats: "In the first year of George W. Bush's presidency, one major media figure told my wife and me to our faces that the difference between the Clinton crowd and the Bush team was that, "They're just better people than you are. They're more loyal to their President, more patriotic, less self-interested and ambitious. They're just better people."
"Now we learn that these Better People have turned the White House into a criminal enterprise."
-- Paul Begala in the Huffington Post
  • Fire and Brimstone: "The Sky Report has secretly filmed America's most controversial ministers praising the London bombings. Fred Phelps said terrorist outrages and natural disasters such as Hurrican Katrina are examples of God's wrath against countries such as America and Britain for tolerating homosexuals and homosexuality."
    -- Sky News
