November 20, 2007
Julie Schumacher Cohen, Legislative Coordinator

The Ackerman-Boustany letter was sent to Secretary of State Rice late yesterday with a total of 135 signers! The letter supports the upcoming Annapolis conference, urges robust U.S. diplomacy before and after the meeting, and suggests additional steps to ensure success, including financial assistance to the Palestinians. The joint leadership of Reps. Gary Ackerman (D-NY) and Charles Boustany (R-LA) represents the first Jewish-Arab-led Congressional initiative on Israeli-Palestinian peace in years, if ever, and the significant number of signers exceeds all previous pro-peace efforts in the House. Signatories include liberal Democrats, conservative Republicans and leaders in both parties (the full list is included below).

Your advocacy on this letter, together with Jewish and Arab-Americans guided by our collegial organizations including Americans for Peace Now, Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, Israel Policy Forum, the American Task Force on Palestine and the Arab American Institute, made a real impact. This show of Congressional support for U.S. efforts to reinvigorate the peace process and for providing aid to the Palestinians is an important message ahead of the meeting in Annapolis, likely to take place on Nov 26th or 27th. See "Capitol Hill's Breaking Iceberg", the Nov 16th column by M.J. Rosenberg of Israel Policy Forum, for further analysis of this positive initiative.
