Action alert: EPPN Alert - ENERGY BILL on the brink of passage or extinction

The Episcopal Public Policy Network
Policy Alert
The House and Senate are on the brink of passing an Energy Bill that would invest in renewable sources of energy and increased fuel efficiency. As Congress feverishly works to bring this session of the 110th Congress to a close before Christmas, we need your voice TODAY!
This week the House passed H.R. 6, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which will raise fuel economy standards for the first time in 32 years to 35 miles per gallon and require 15 percent of our nation's electricity to come from clean, renewable resources.
Right now the Senate is considering a slimmed down version of this bill that is not as strong as the House bill, but retains the important increase in fuel economy standards. Votes may occur as early as TODAY. If approved this legislation must go back to the House.
This energy bill is an important first step in the direction of addressing climate change and demonstrating our nation's commitment to avoiding the catastrophic effects of global warming, particularly for vulnerable communities at home and abroad. Congressional aides have indicated that if Congress can't pass an energy bill, they won't be able to take up global warming legislation next year.
As the world community meets now in Bali at the United Nations Climate Change Conference to develop a road map for future international climate change goals, it would be unfortunate if the U.S. Congress failed in passing modest legislation that addresses our nation's contribution to climate change.
Your voice is needed TODAY to urge both Representatives and Senators to support the strongest energy bill possible -- an energy bill that invests in both renewable energy and increased fuel efficiency.
