The Case for Hillary Clinton, Part One

Over the next ten days or so I shall be posting a multi-part series on why Hillary Clinton is my choice for President.

I know that many of you will greet these postings with responses that range from doubt to open hostility. As unwarranted as I believe such reactions to be, that is your right. I too have my doubts about some of her past positions, not many, but some (the flag burning legislation for example). But overall, I will outline the case for her nomination and election. And while Senator Obama and former Senator Edwards talk about change, Hillary has been actively engaged in making it happen—often in the face of fierce Right-wing hostility. All I ask is that you give me the courtesy of stating my peace and then for you to reflect upon what I offer as proof.

In the first installment, I compare the candidates on the issue of embryonic stem cell research and its applications to the freedom of conscience. As many of you know I have agitated for federal funding and oversight for this promising research ever since the very first days of the Bush administration. I even ran a 527 that helped elect pro-research candidates, the Committee for the Advancement of Stem Cell Research, from 2001 through 2005. And as many of you know, since 2006 I have written regularly about the Religious Right, focusing (as a Catholic) upon the special danger to religious freedom presented by both neoconservatism and their allies within the Vatican. It is in this vein that I make my case.

Part One, Stem Cell Research and Religious Freedom
Hillary Clinton is a champion in the fight for expanded federal funding and oversight for embryonic stem cell research (“hESC”). Besides supporting the research from her arrival in the Senate, she has promised to sign an executive order overturning President Bush's restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research once she if elected President (a Google search for both Senator Obama and Senator Edwards did not reveal any such pledge on their part; If you find any, kindly post it as a comment and be sure to include a link).
Besides introducing Ron Reagan Jr.’s pro-research speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, she is a co-sponsor of Stem Cell Research Enhancement Acts of 2005 and 2007.

President Bush callously vetoed both bills paying more attention to the desires of a neo-orthodox Catholic hierarchy than to ordinary Catholics like me who suffer from muscular dystrophy and desperately need this research explored. Understanding the needs of people like me as opposed to an increasingly out-of-touch Vatican, Senator Clinton has declared that if elected president, she will lift restrictions imposed by President Bush. As she succinctly put it, "This is just one example of how the president puts ideology before science, politics before the needs of our families."

And lest we forget, the desire to federally embryonic stem cell research began in the waning days of the Clinton administration. First isolated in late 1998, it was Bill Clinton, not George W. Bush who wanted to use the power of government to realize the potential of this science. Yet, this was not to be. One of President Bush’s very first actions as president was to derail the Clinton plan for providing disease researchers with both the necessary government oversight and funding.

But the issue of stem cell research extends into a larger issue: freedom of conscience. And to stand up for embryonic stem cell research is often synonymous with standing up to both the Religious Right and their neoconservative backers.

In an earlier article I outlined what so upsets neo-orthodox Catholics, hard-line evangelicals and neocons about this issue:

But the greater issue here is Modernity. Both Straussian-neoconservatives as well as ultra-orthodox Catholics rail against it. Their common opposition to hESC research is classic manifestation of such a belief. Value Pluralism is not acceptable, only submission by all to one selective version of "the truth." Embryonic stem cell research clearly interferes with this scenario because it begins to demystify science and in their eyes, removes the virtue of human heroism (something Eric Cohen has elaborated upon in his writings).

It is the very same obsession with modernity that leads this strident alliance to also lash out against feminism, reproductive rights and at times, evolution. This assault on reason is similarly directed at Senator Clinton by the very same cast of characters. They attack her because to them she is modernism personified—a thinking woman who acts for change. Repeatedly she has stood up to those who seek to impose an ultra-orthodox variant of natural law principles on all Americans.

This brings me to John Edwards. For all of the former North Carolina Senator’s talk of change, he surely took his time embracing this cause. So much so that one of my fellow stem cell activists who lobbied Edwards back in 2002 on the issue found him overly cautious. So much so that he didn't commit until he decided not to run for reelection for the Senate. And while he has since embraced the issue—more decidedly so in light of his wife’s illness, back when initial support was so necessary he was apparently doing a political calculation centered on potential voters in conservative-thinking North Carolina.

Another candidate who talks about “change” is the newly anointed Democratic frontrunner, Senator Barack Obama. A closer look at his record, however, will cause the objective reader to question just how much he would fight for hESC research if elected president.

Obama has demonstrated an unsettling habit of pandering to Right-wing lingo on issues ranging from Social Security to attacks on the legal profession, going as far to use the pejorative phrase “trial lawyers.” Clearly, this is not the refreshing breeze of change, but the same stormy winds of fear and demonization.

I recognize similar examples of Obama pandering on religious issues. All-too-readily he buys into stock GOP talking points. Here is an example of what I mean.

Back on June 28, 2006 Obama gave the keynote address at Call to Renewal's Building a Covenant for a New America conference. In that speech was this little gem:

Democrats, for the most part, have taken the bait. At best, we may try to avoid the conversation about religious values altogether, fearful of offending anyone and claiming that - regardless of our personal beliefs - constitutional principles tie our hands. At worst, there are some liberals who dismiss religion in the public square as inherently irrational or intolerant, insisting on a caricature of religious Americans that paints them as fanatical, or thinking that the very word "Christian" describes one's political opponents, not people of faith. (emphasis added)

Someone truly trying to change the course of the conversation would have said something along these lines:

As both a Democrat as well as being a person of faith I dismiss our opponents’ claim that Democrats are hostile to religion. When the Right makes this claim, they almost always never name specific individuals but instead speak in generalizations. Are there a few cranky atheists who are hostile to faith? Maybe. But even most nonbelievers respect the faith of others.

Instead, let us speak frankly. Their charge of Democratic hostility towards religious expression is at best, an exaggeration. The separation of church and state exists not to exclude faith from our discussions, but to ensure that every American enjoys the freedom of conscience envisioned by the Founders. And if there is any real, more organized hostility to spirituality, it comes from the neoconservative Right who all too often uses the anxiety of damnation to demonize liberalism, promote unilateral war and destroy Social Security.

Unfortunately, Obama took the easy way out by buying into the Religious Right’s talking points. He wasted a golden opportunity to do something truly constructive by correcting the direction of an erroneous, but all-too-readily accepted discourse.

But you ask, what does this all have to do with Barack Obama’s support of embryonic stem cell research? Plenty.

Obama’s Call to Renewal speech should send up a red flag to every person of faith who cherishes the freedom of conscience. His not-so-lofty words suggest that he will abandon core liberal values when it suits his purpose. Will that be the case if his friend Jim Wallis were to pressure him on this issue? And we do know that Wallis is anti-choice. The fact that we cannot be certain is cause for concern.

Always implicit within the Illinois junior Senator’s talk of change is compromise. On the issue of stem cell research backbone will be necessary. Will he roll over on a host of issues just to make peace with the GOP? (Remember folks, some of his newest admirers are neocons such as David Brooks, former Bush “architect” Karl Rove as well paleo-conservative George Will—none of whom particularly known for the art of compromise, but radical partisanship).

In the last debate Hillary said, “Words are not actions…and as beautifully presented and passionately felt as they are, they are not action. What we have got to do is translate thought into action and feeling into reality.”

Even if both Edwards and Obama were also to sign an executive order undoing the Bush roadblocks to federally fund hESC research, the Religious Right will not simply roll over and give up. Will either of these two gentleman be willing to use the Justice Department to fend off the court challenges that are sure to follow? I have my doubts where Senator Obama is concerned. In his bid to change Washington, his rhetoric suggests that he may well buy into the sham that reprogrammed cells now obviates the need for embryonic stem cell research? Appeasement might be part and parcel of his definition of change.

Yes, there are also some questions regarding Hillary, especially her unclear association The Fellowship. But I choose to judge her by her overall record. She is a person of faith who clearly respects the boundary that separates church and state; a boundary that gived me the freedom to practice my Catholicism without the fear that the state will be the enforcement arm of my church.

From my experience as a stem cell activist it is Hillary who has the necessary toughness to fight both neocons and the Religious Right. She is best suited to get this research properly funded and back on track before it was so rudely interrupted. That is real change, not lofty rhetoric. And that’s why she has my support.

Next, clearing up misconceptions about the war.

more reasons I like Senator Obama

rungavagairun's picture

A friend asked me why I like Obama. She has been torn between Obama and Clinton. This was my response to her.

Regarding Senator Barack Obama.
1. I like where he stands on issues of social justice and policy. He's a bit more conservative than I would be in some areas, but I think that may give him broader appeal in a general election. It may be that in order to make significant change, things have to be done incrementally (in some areas) in order to avoid conflict and actually move forward. Baby steps forward are better than stagnation or regression.
2. I also believe that his ability to communicate in ways that transcend ideological differences is very important. I think Hillary may have a lot of the same goals and principles, but translating that into terms that make sense to people with diverse worldviews is something that I've not seen from her. She seems more apt to divide than unite.
3. I respect the fact that Barack had the foresight to oppose the war in Iraq from the beginning even when the majority of the party (including Hillary) supported it. To me, that is a clear demonstration of wisdom in foreign policy. Hillary's positions on foreign policy sound very reminiscent of the Republican aggressive stances.

I have to agree on earlier comments

I'm new here, and glad to come across this site, but had to weigh in on this topic.

I think as has been alluded to many times from different angles, Clinton historically has proven to be a very devisive individual, quite effective at producing enemies, then "fighting the good fight" against them. She is so entrenched in Washington as usual (concerning the means not the ends) that she can't imagine a new way of doing things.

Anytime someone has managed to accomplish major positive change in history, its almost always a constructive positive force, sowing seeds of the desired outcome that achieves it. Take Ghandi or MLK or best of all Christ, as examples. If you want a better future for the world or nation, you have to sow seeds of peace and love, courage, and hope. Act and speak from a place that brings people together for a better future, not further divides them and CREATES new obstacles to overcome. Diffuse the anger and biggotry that presents the biggest obstacles not further it, and you'll be so much more likely to accomplish the end goal with means that match it.

Having watched so much good legislation over the last 7 years make it to the whitehouse only to get either veto'ed or dumbed down to the point of uselessness, the last thing is another president thats still entrenched in bi-partisan battles and just wasting more of washington's time fighting battles that don't benefit anyone.

These reasons are why I'm actively supporting Obama. He reaches across all lines and brings people together, helps them to believe in the positive constructive force we can be as a democracy if our means match the desired end, being constructive and civil, not divisive and biting. There's a reason he is building a movement and its because he does embody these things, and I think that Hillary is only further proving my point every day with her backhanded biting remarks towards anyone she views as a threat to her course. She is sowing seeds counter to the end she proclaims to stand for, and that just wont' work.

I think there's a reason that Jesus' sermon on the mount is so striking and its because its God's wisdom, not that of this world, and so when he says if some one strikes one cheek, offer them the other, I think He knows that you cannot end up in a place of love if you do know sow seeds of love to get there.

Sorry for the super long first post, but this is drastic difference I've seen in Obama and Clinton for a few years now thats had me supporting him before there was even an official race. I also think its why Hillary really doesn't get the change that Obama is speaking about, because she's been in this mode of bi-partisan conflict, that she can't picture a different way of doing business in that town. Obama on the other hand constantly walks across the aisle and speaks and acts in ways that unite, not divide them, as a common force for good.

GO OBAMA!!!

Hiya AnthonyS!!

Welcome!! A great first post, I am tempted to just say "me too" and try to be one of the short-winded ones, but you'd quickly see through that. I'm one of the long-winded ones, a rambler, a story-teller, one of those who argues with myself as I type until all of me agrees. And those are the longest of all, because I can be bullheaded at times.

I also support Obama, and have since before he announced his candidacy. He's my candidate for all the reasons you named, plus the very personal reason that he inspires me, my heart soars with his speeches and I DO believe we can be better than we are, as Americans and as Christians.

I would be pleased and proud to support any of the three Democrats still running, sometimes I want Hillary to win so bad my heart hurts, and I don't want to wait another half century for gender equality the way we had to wait for the vote, sometimes I think Edwards wouldn't be a bad president at all. But I still think Obama is the best candidate and that's where my support is.

Keep talking, Anthony, and feel welcomed here. You most definitely are another voice we need!

Welcome AnthonyS

Come often Anthony ,post often. Many on this site are verbose, and usually it is a good thing. Your post wasn't particularly long at all.

It is refreshing and stimulating when new people speak, and i hope to read more from you.

I am a Christian of the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount is where I stand, and i offer you my spin on it and look forward to your reply:

About 2,000 years ago, when Christ was about 33, he hiked up a hill and sat down under an olive tree and began to teach the people;

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven."

In other words: it is those who know their own spiritual poverty, their own limitations and sins honestly and trust God loves them in spite of themselves who already live in the Kingdom of God.

How comforted we will all be, when we see, we haven't got a clue, as to the depth and breadth of pure love and mercy of The Divine Mystery of The Universe. God's name in ancient Aramaic is Abba which means Daddy as much as Mommy and He/She: The Lord has said, "My ways are not your ways. My thoughts are not yours." -Isaiah 55:8

Christ proclaimed more: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

The essence of meek is to be patient with ignorance, slow to anger and never hold a grudge. In other words: how happy you will be when you also know humility; when you know yourself, the good and the bad, for both cut through every human heart.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, they will be filled."

In other words: how happy you will be when your greatest desire is to do what "God requires, and he has already told you what that is; BE JUST, BE MERCIFUL and walk humbly with your Lord."-Micah 6:8

"Blessed are the merciful, they will be shown mercy." In other words: how happy you will all be when you choose to return only kindness to your 'enemy.'

"For with the measure you measure against another, it will be measured back to you." Christ warns his disciples as he explains the law of karma in Luke 6:27-38.

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they see God."

In other words: how happy you will be when you WAKE UP and see God is already within you, within every man, every woman and every child. The Supreme Being is everywhere, the Alpha and Omega, beginning and end. Beyond The Universe -and yet so small; within the heart of every atom.

"Blessed are The Peacemakers: THEY shall be called the children of God."

Oh how happy the WORLD will be when we all seek justice and pursue it, for there can be none without the other.

"Blessed are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires, theirs is The Kingdom of Heaven." And one fine day the lion will lie down with The Lamb and man will make war no more and that is the Kingdom of God.

PS: Do you know Dorothy Day?

"Love is not the starving of whole populations. Love is not the bombardment of open cities. Love is not killing......Our manifesto is the Sermon on the Mount, which means that we will try to be peacemakers." -Dorothy Day

Leaning towards Hillary

Angelo Lopez's picture

Welcome AnthonyS. I'm another of the people who writes longwinded posts, but that seems to be o.k. here. Your blog was thoughtful and insightful.

My top two candidates, Biden and Richardson, have dropped out so now I have no choice but to pick among the top 3. I like what you wrote about Obama and generally agree. My only real negative against Obama is his lack of experience, but I think it's a strong negative. If Obama becomes President, I think he'll be like JFKs presidency: JFK was inspirational and got the country generally moving in the right direction (except in Vietnam), but he didn't actually get much legislation passed. It seems like the Presidents who passed substantial liberal or progressive legislation, like FDR or LBJ, were shrewd political operators who knew how to build support in congress and the public and knew how to fight a Republican opposition that doesn't always fight fair. I'd vote for Obama if he could show that he also has the political shrewdness to match his good ideas.

Right now I'm leaning towards Hillary, just because she's tough and I think her time in the Senate has shown that she knows how to work with Senators to build coalitions and pass bills. She doesn't have the natural charisma that Obama or her husband has, but she is inspirational to a lot of women. During the holidays, I talked a bit about the elections, and both my wife and my sister-in-law were strongly Hillary. I'm more liberal than Hillary, but I think she can be moved if the general public is moved more to the left.

Since reading crossleft, I've been caught up in this idea of the moderates and the radicals needing each other. I think Hillary is a moderate who is positioning herself towards the political center, which is what moderates should do. Progressives though should be pushing in the primaries to get as many progressive ideas heard by the general public as possible. I think the key to that is Kucinich and Edwards. It bothered me last weekend that Kucinich didn't get in the New Hampshire debate, especially when I saw that the Republicans had room for Ron Paul and Fred Thompson in their debates. My brother, who is Green, likes Kucinich and I think Kucinich is the most articulate progressive voice in the Democratic Party. Of the 3 frontrunners, Edwards is easily the most progressive candidate. If he can win a few primaries and get his ideas out to middle America, it'll force Obama and Hillary to adopt stronger stands against poverty.

I want a Democratic President who can get things done because of something Bill wrote in a post. If the Democrats win big, but don't get anything substantial done, it'll be a big setback for liberal Democrats and a huge boost for Republicans in 2012. That's what happened with Jimmy Carter in the 1970s. I want a Democratic President with political skills to get thing done, and a progressive movement that works to move the political center to the left.

Early Next Week...

...I'll have another Case for Hillary post; this time on the war.

Trust me, it won't be what you think.

Hillary plays the fear card

Stephen Rockwell's picture

I was watching Olbermann tonight and Hillary played the fear card today. She invoked Al Queda during a town hall campaign saying that we have to be concerned that Al Queda is watching this election and made reference to the terrorist attacks the day after Gordon Brown took office.

Bill Clinton did the same thing just a few weeks back:

Sounds like Karl Rove to me...its disgusting.

CLINTON TAINTED VICTORY IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Allen L Roland is a practicing psychotherapist, author and lecturer who also shares a daily political and social commentary on his weblog and website allenroland.com He also guest hosts a monthly national radio show TRUTHTALK on www.conscioustalk.net

He wrote the following:

Voting irregularities in New Hampshire point not only to the previously discredited Diebold Accuvote optical scan but to the distinct possibility that the Clintons, who obviously represent the Washington establishment and the status quo, will do anything to satisfy their corporate interests and stay in power: Allen L Roland

Yesterday when I read the New Hampshire election returns I was shocked by Clinton's victory ~ particularly when reliable polls showed Obama with a double digit lead on the eve of the election.

The one thing I refused to consider was the possibility of the election being hacked but now I am beginning to realize two apparent truths ~ 1. The Washington establishment is terrified of the people and will go to any lengths to maintain their power and corporate strangle hold on the government .

2. The Clintons are an integral part of the Washington establishment and status quo and, as such, will go to any lengths to preserve their power ~ even at the expense of a fair and honest election.

Here are the facts ~ read them and get angry !

Bev Harris. Black Box Voting, bev@blackboxvoting.org

" John Silvestro and his small private business, LHS Associates, has exclusive programming contracts for ALL New Hampshire voting machines, which combined will count about 81 percent of the vote in the primary. And as to Super Tuesday and beyond: Silvestro also has the programming contracts for the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont.

NEW HAMPSHIRE HAD NOT IMPLEMENTED MITIGATIONS FOR KNOWN RISKS

Not only that, they have turned all the programming over to a sole source private company, taking vote counting for 81 percent of New Hampshire citizens out of the public domain.

LHS is not subject to public records requirements, as the government is, at least, not in New Hampshire. Their control over memory card contents is absolute; when cards malfunction or get lost, LHS brings the replacements."

Those Diebold op-scan machines are the exact same ones that were hacked in the HBO documentary, Hacking Democracy.
The New Hampshire pre-election pollster's numbers were accurate, for the most part, on the Republican side, as well as on the Democratic side ~ except in the Clinton / Obama race where machine counted votes gave Clinton a whopping 6% vote advantage over hand counted paper ballots.

Where Paper Prevailed, Different Results By Lori Price 09 Jan 2008

2008 New Hampshire Democratic Primary Results --Total Democratic Votes: 286,139 - Machine vs Hand (RonRox.com) 09 Jan 2008

Hillary Clinton, Diebold Accuvote optical scan: 39.618%
Clinton, Hand Counted Paper Ballots: 34.908%

Barack Obama, Diebold Accuvote optical scan: 36.309%

Obama, Hand Counted Paper Ballots: 38.617%

Machine vs Hand:
Clinton: 4.709% (13,475 votes)
Obama: -2.308% (-6,604 votes)

In summary, not only was Clinton's New Hampshire victory tainted if not apparently hacked but the Clintons must now clearly be seen as part of the Washington establishment and status quo and, in no way, agents of true change.

What I do find interesting about your conspiracy theory is that you’re operating on a similar wavelength as Rush Limbaugh.

are you talking to me?

If so, i am LOL hysterically!

I have NO CLUE as to what Rush says about Hillary as i never tune him in, but if he is WIDE AWAKE and open minded enough to see Clinton is BIG BAD NEWS for the USA and the world, i would LOVE to engage in conversation with him!!!

The photo is NOT me with Gravel-the photo is one i did take on the day I covered the Orlando Peace March against Military Occupation and was published by the secular Editors of Peoples Voice attached to my article.

I have no interest in hearing Rush spout off as I have successfully avoided him all these years, and i wonder why you know so much about him?

I also avoid the MSM ever since their coverage of the attack on Iraq that failed to show the full consequences of war which are the innocents who are caught in the cross fire of terrorism-for ANY innocent caught up in war is TERRORIZED!

What i offer readers is my personal experiences not just personal opinions.

And as someone on this site once wrote: there is too much "mental masturbation" and i took that to mean too much personal opinions and not much of the social gospel.

What I care about is America's soul and bringing in the Kingdom of God when men will make war no more, for they have finally evolved to what Jesus said when he told:

"You must be born again."

What he meant was a TRANSFORMATION of heart and mind to see The Divine is already within everyone.

Of course I support stem cell research for it could unlock the door for medicine to HEAL and not just treat diseases.

I support the right of all LIFE and that means NOT supporting any candidate who has voted for war and supports Military Occupation.

Hillary is all about the status quo and gets BIG money from the Industrial Military Complex and AIPAC. If Rush comprehends this too; more power to him!

Too true Jim.

No Thanks

I like debate very much and find it a challenge when I'm confronted with a cogent disagreement. However, I can't deal with self-indulgence and "arguments" that are not much more than rants one would find on a bumper sticker.

Here is what I mean, and I'll address this directly to the self-proclaimed prophet/martyr/mystic from Wide Awake:

Eileen, you keep making the rote rant that “Hillary is AIPAC's candidate.”

If that is so, then why did Marty Peretz write this in The New Republic?

And the fact is that most Israelis knew Bill Clinton as a lover -- but as an unfaithful lover. They go back in memory to the fall of 2000 when Clinton steamrolled Ehud Barak into concessions that were unwise and perilous but nonetheless did not entice Arafat into a deal but into starting the Second Intifada. Since I've been here I've spoken with three top security veterans who actually were terrified that, if Hillary were president, she'd send her husband as a mediator in the Israel-Palestinian conflict where, at best, he'd do well-intentioned damage.

More and more when you use terms like AIPAC so loosely, I strongly suspect that you purposely us it as a euphemism for “the Jews” and done so to thinly disguise an anti-Semitic (Jewish) sentiment on your part.

WAKE UP bro

The biggest supporters of AIPAC are NOT the JEWS!

The BIG supporters of AIPAC are Christian Zionists; who are fundamentalist Christians and neo-cons who believe they can bring Jesus back by a nuclear war!!!

While you call it 'disrespectful'

I call it following what GOD has put in my heart and I will NOT shut up trying to WAKE UP my sisters and brothers and nonbelievers to what Jesus was always on about!

Jesus was always on about WAKE UP!!!

The Divine is already within you and all others!

NO religion owns God and NO Church owns Jesus.

Jesus was NEVER a Christian and the term 'Christian' was not even coined until the days of Paul, about 3 decades after Jesus walked the earth a man.

Jesus was a social, justice, radical revolutionary Palestinian devout Jewish road warrior who rose up and challenged the job security of the Temple authorities by teaching the people they did NOT need to pay the priests for ritual baths or sacrificing livestock to be OK with God; for God already LOVED them just as they were:

Sinners, poor, diseased, outcasts, widows, orphans, refugees and prisoners all living under Roman Military Occupation.

What got Jesus crucified was disturbing the status quo of the Roman Occupying Forces of his time, by teaching the subversive concept that Caesar only had power because God allowed it and that God preferred the humble sinner, the poor, diseased, outcasts, widows, orphans, refugees and prisoners all living under Roman Occupation above the elite and arrogant !

2,000 years ago The Cross had NO symbolic religious meaning.

When Jesus said: "Pick up your cross and follow me."

He was issuing a POLITICAL statement, for the main roads in Jerusalem were lined with crucified agitators, rebels, dissidents and any others who disturbed the status quo of the Roman Occupying Forces.

100 years before Jesus walked the earth a man, Rabbi Hillel knew that the Hebrew understanding of Hokema; Holy Wisdom; The Feminine Divinity

Was the same as the Greek understanding of The Logos: The Word.

It was the first John and Paul who understood,

The Word was good and The Word was The Logos and The Word was Jesus.

It was John Lennon on 'Rubber Soul' who intuitively knew:

"The Word is just The Way and The Word is Love."

So, with a little imagination, an open heart and mind, one could see that before Jesus walked the earth a man; He was already a SHE!

Hokema, Holy Wisdom; the Feminine Divinity

Now, isn't that good news?

Take it or leave it; for that is what GRACE is all about!

community standards

Stephen Rockwell's picture

Well, while we have yet to formally adopt the community standards, this type of treatment of others clearly falls outside the bounds of those standards.

Pardon Me, i thought this was a PROGRESSIVE site

www.wearewideawake.org's picture

I also find it quite amusing how NYGarabaldi's sarcastic mean spiritedness towards me is perfectly OK with you, but my attempts to enlighten you that the neo-con base and fundamentalist Christians are one in the same and the fastest growing cult in the USA are Christian Zionists.

What just popped into my heart/head as i wrote the above is Jesus from Matthew 10:14:

"If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet and leave."

Please delete me as a X-Left blogger, I leave in peace.

bye bye and good luck,

it is, that's why we're asking for respectful behavior

Stephen Rockwell's picture

telling people to wake up because you disagree with them doesn't seem to be respectful. you did the same thing to me in regards to Ron Paul.

and we will honor your request on the featured blogger. please feel free to continue to post, but please also be respectful of others and other points of view.

respectfully diagree

Prophets are never recognized by their own and God always raised prophets to wake up the people. I am sorry to see Ms. Flemming's face missing from this place, it is a loss for Crossleft.

Sad to see Eileen go too

Angelo Lopez's picture

I'm sad to see Eileen go too. I learned quite a bit from reading her posts on the Israeli/Palestinian grassroots movement.

mee too

I only registered just now because I to wanted to say that Eileen gave me alot of things to think about that I never knew about. I like the way she makes words rhymme and I'am sorry her smiling face is gone from the homepage here but she is still smiling on her own homepage so there I will go too.

I Didn't Like It Either

But as I will demonstrate within the coming installments, Obama and Edwards are also quite capable of some nasty, uncalled for remarks. Obama just isn't getting called on it because he is the mainstream press's darling right now.

Don't worry; I explain how Hillary and Obama are judged by the same standards.

more negativity from Bill

Stephen Rockwell's picture

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/01/08/bill-clinton-targets-med...

That's right...Obama presents a positive, inclusive message and folks get behind it so go negative, Bill. Get out there and do the dirty work so your wife doesn't have to. A former president and leader of the party attacking a pretty remarkable Democratic candidate.

Its disgusting.

I hope we reject this outright and I think in this day it will turn folks off even more to the Clintons.

You Know Steve...

...I think you've been listening to Chris Matthews a bit too much. She's not exactly the second coming of Joe McCarthy. There is a reason why the neocons don't like her; pretty much for the same reasons we don't like the neocons.

I just saw Bill Clinton's remarks and he is dead-on correct about the press.

chris mathews has nothing to do with my opinions

Stephen Rockwell's picture

Even though he's a good philly guy, he's got nothing to do with my opinions. Hillary's comment to him yesterday about "she doesn't know why men like him are obsessed with her" was a little off base.

The Clintons have gone negative and picked up the typical political playbook about what you do when you fall behind. It backfired on Romney and will likely do the same for the Clintons.

While I would certainly vote for Hillary over any of the Republicans, her strategy has let us remember exactly what we don't like about the Clintons, political expediency over moral principle.

Good points on Stem Cell and Religious Freedom

Angelo Lopez's picture

These are good comments Frank on Hillary's position on stem cell research and religious freedom. Hillary has a strong progressive stand on this issue and most social issues and I don't think you'll get much of an argument from many here on this. I think your hard sell will be on Hillary's positions on Iraq and free trade, as these seem to be the main points of contention with many progressives. I look forward to reading your next series on these points.

Thank you Angelo

All I ask is that people listen and consider.

I Will Address This Too

You say:

The reason that I back Barack is because the change that he is advocating is not merely substance but also change of form. I don't believe that Hillary can unite people in the way that Barack or even John Edwards might be able to do.

Thank you for your insightful comments. In the last or second to last installment I believe that I will be able to establish why Hillary and not Obama is the better choice and in doing so, address your concerns.

my 1 reason for opposing Hillary

rungavagairun's picture

Frank
I think she's very intelligent and I fall into most of the same positions on the issues as she does. The reason that I back Barack is because the change that he is advocating is not merely substance but also change of form. I don't believe that Hillary can unite people in the way that Barack or even John Edwards might be able to do. We need a leader who can articulate not only the policies that he or she favors, but to present those ideals and principles that have molded those positions in a way that ties into broad values that we share as Americans.

As to your concerns about people attacking you for favoring Hillary, I hope that worries like that are not realized here and that we can all respect each other's views. We're here because we share some of the same visions and hopes.

David

Would I Vote For Obama?

If he got the nomination, yes.

But as I would do so because he is still better than anything the GOP has to offer. And as I will explain throughout this series, with well-founded reservations.

One last courtesy is requested. This will be a series of about five posts. It would be helpful to keep comments focused on what I have stated. Economic and Middle East issues will be raised in upcoming pieces (that’s a hint for you Eileen). So you’ll get your shot at the appropriate time.
