Preaching Taxes in Texas

I go to a middle-of-the-road United Methodist church with an excellent senior pastor who is nonetheless better known for his entertaining top ten lists than for his challenging sermons on social and justice issues. And it was Children's Sunday. The scripture was read by three adorable children. The sermon thus came like that icy breath that freezes everything in sight on the gum commercial.
First, let it be known that the Judicial Council of the UMC made a big mistake in its October 29 ruling. No, no, that had to be said. And he said it. And I was gratified to hear it. But that's not even the prophetic part.
When's the last time you heard a pastor call for raising taxes? Yes, right there at the altar in the home state of President Tax Cut. Dr. Clayton Oliphint said we in Texas should do better than dragging the bottom in the nation in measures of how well we educate our children, and if raising our taxes is what it takes to improve the state we leave to our children, then raise our taxes is what we should do.
