Sen. Obama and the Tides of History
Time goes on, life goes on. Stand still and life will pass you by, or run you over, grind you into the dust of history. Like civilizations people rise and fall. The smart ones, the ones that survive, see what's coming and either move with the tide or move aside. They understand the wisdom spoken by the historian George Santayana, "Those who do not remember the past, are condemned to repeat it".
I believe we are now witnessing a paradigm shift in American society. In the world of religion we've seen the passing of Rev.'s Kennedy and Falwell and are seeing the passing by of Rev's Dobson and Robertson. Politically we are now seeing the passing by of Fidel Castro, Gen. Mushariff and George W. Bush et. al.
Progressives move forward, move with the times, often are the movers and shakers. Conservatives stay in place, try to hold back the tide - to dam it up (and are damned in the process.) Progressives move the social agenda with love and respect. Motivated more by fear, conservatives, true to their name, try to conserve, to preserve. They have too much invested in the status quo to "let go and let God". Many were often one time liberals who now have obtained social status, political success and material wealth. They then struggle to hold on, blocking progress and are eventually overwhelmed by the relentless tide of history, the desire for the have nots to have what the haves, have.
We need both progressives and conservatives. Progressives see current unmet needs and to move the social agenda forward and conservatives hold on to what needs preserving slowing the tide to a deliberate responsible pace.
Senator Obama has seen the rising tide, is one who moves with the tide, adding his energies to the rising tides of change. With the conservatives trying conserve their gains they try to turn back the tides and are about to be washed away. Senators Clinton and McCain are a part of the tide blockers and will be washed away, I'm certain. In most recent American history men like Jack Kennedy and Newt Gingrich were caught up in the tide for change and rode it to success.
With the current economic and foreign policy failures pushing America toward change, Senator Obama is simply riding the tide of history. Success is his - if he can ride the tide while not being washed away by the torrent. As they say, "Only time will tell". May Our Creator bless him with the love, light and wisdom of the ages.

Move or get out of the way!
Angelo,
The 2008 election is going to be one for the history books. A young black male vs an older white guy. Should be a slam dunk for the white guy, right?, especially an older "good Christian" white guy vs a young black dude with "dubious" Christian credentials, maybe even worse (horrors!!) a "Muslim terrorist in disquise!" WoOOoo. Look out!, them goblins 'er gonna git ya!
Well hang on here folks, with the price of oil this morning now over $103/barrel (with the nagging suspicion in the eyes of many Ameicans that the only reason we are in Iraq was for it's oil reserves, the worlds 2nd largest known reserves), with gold at $985/oz this morning (up from $422 in Spring of 2004), the price of food up 25% in the last year (due in part to increased transportation fuel costs + diversion of food stocks like corn to alternative fuel production), the price of gasoline at the pump projected to hit $4/gal by Summer, the value of the dollar at an all time low (with the subsequent rise in prices for everything) and you have all the makings of a recession. Let's call it like it is a "Republican Recession." Let us start the drum beat "Republican Recession, Republican Recession".
The Democrats should be in an increasingly great position to regain the white house and a filibuster proof Senate. However, given past performances, the Democrats could still "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory". Yet, even the dumb Dems probably won't let this one escape them. For one they have a very savvy disciplined woman in charge of the House (born and raised in a powerful Democratic household nearby here in Baltimore) and secondly a young black man who seems destined to inherit Camelot (especially with the last remaining Prince of Camelot, powerful in his own right, supporting him) and the tides of history seem destined to carry even the normally inept Dem's into power. It's theirs to bumble away.
So be of good cheer my progressive friends (and pray the Dems don't blow this one!)

Good Post on History
Good post on Senator Obama and history. I agree with what you said about Progressives and Conservatives, especially when you wrote: "Progressives see current unmet needs and to move the social agenda forward and conservatives hold on to what needs preserving slowing the tide to a deliberate responsible pace." I think the best Progressive leaders are those who can ease the fears of the undecided and persuade them of the inevitability of change.
