Action Alert: EPPN Alert - SAVE Act Not "Saving" Anyone

The Episcopal Public Policy Network
Policy Alert

The SAVE Act (HR 4088), introduced by Representatives Shuler and Tancredo, provides an enforcement only solution to the problems of our failed immigration system. Not only is the legislation unacceptable, but its sponsors are trying to move it to the House floor without the opportunity for the standard committee review, debate, or possibility of amendment!

The so-called SAVE Act provides no solution to the several million undocumented workers in the U.S., fails to deal with the visa backlogs which frustrate the reunification of immediate family members, requires local public safety officers to enforce immigration law to the detriment of public safety considerations, and mandates an untested and demonstrably faulty employer verification system which lacks adequate safeguards to protect many legal workers from wrongful termination. The Shuler/Tancredo bill is totally contrary to the principles adopted by The Episcopal Church on immigration reform, principles that balance enforcement considerations with a need to offer practical, fair, and humane solutions to repair our broken immigration system (See Executive Council resolution "Support Immigration Reform").

Right now the sponsors are working to circumvent standard procedure by trying to bring their bill to the House floor without the opportunity for committee review, debate, or amendment via a "discharge petition."

Please take action TODAY! Urge your representative NOT to sign the Discharge Petition for the SAVE Act (HR 4088), which provides an enforcement only solution to the problems of our failed immigration system.

There are now 185 signatories of the 218 needed to move the bill forward (as of 4/1). It is imperative that your representative not sign the discharge petition to prevent this very flawed bill from moving forward and risking an attempt to change our immigration system without proper debate and review.

Send a message to your representative TODAY asking s/he NOT sign the discharge petition that would move the SAVE Act forward.

Forward this message to a friend HERE.
