The Antithesis of Crossleft
Alternet has an article today about a group whose approach to Christianity is the exact opposite of Crossleft's and others who advocate the social gospel. The frightening thing is that some members of the group are our Congressional Representatives and Senators, and the powerful in our country. It is a group called "The Family" or "The Fellowship".They are fundamentalist elitists. They started in the 1930s and prize verses like Romans 13:1-7.Romans 13:1 says (NIV)” Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." Verses like this make me happy to be a non-literalist. Were the Nazis or Stalin's Communist Russia ordained of God? How about George w., is he ordained of God? But reading the verse historically and in context, is Paul a Roman citizen, writing to Romans, and encouraging them not to fight the authorities, but instead to go along to get along?
"The Family" believes in evangelizing the powerful and the elite, forget the poor, they are hopeless. This group wouldn't be noteworthy except that they sponsor prayer groups with our elected leaders right in the Congress and the Senate.

Okay Nancy
Okay Nancy, thanks for the heads up.
I saw your article "Coping with Change" on the Center for Progressive Christianity, could you cross-post it on Crossleft? That could be an interesting article for discussion on this site or among the Panel of Theologians for IPC.
Power Elite
Jim,
I just ordered Daniel Estulin's book, THE TRUE STORY OF THE BILDERBURG GROUP.
It might be wise for all social activists to read this book. The Bilderburg Group held their 2008 meeting in Chantilly, Virginia this past weekend. Historically, the Group has tried to keep the meetings and their locations secret, but this year they were exposed and a few brave souls protested.
Coincidentally, or not, Hillary and Obama chose to meet in Northern Virginia the same weekend and Hillary insisted on waiting until Saturday, 6/7 to make her formal withdrawal from the presidential race.
It is my understanding that the Bilderburg Group chooses the vice-presidential candidate.
Americans need to know what really happens. The Family you mention in your blog likely figure into the scenario of Rule by the Power Elite to which peoples of the world are subject.
Frank - Bilderburg Group, The Family, IRD & Opus Dei. Connected?
Frank,
Are you aware of the Bilderburg Group and The Family? If so, are they related or interconnected to The IRD and/or Opus Dei?
Nancy,
Which party's Veep? Republican? Maybe this is why we hear so little about the GOP Veep selection process. Maybe McCain has no choice, no say in the matter?
Rich
Vice-president selection
Rich,
I believe it is for both parties. The reason I am ordering the book is to try to get some facts.
It is possible that David Swanson at www.davidswanson.org would know. He has a blog on his site about the Bilderburg Group meeting in Chantilly, Virginia this past weekend. He also lives in Northern Virginia and I would bet helped the protestors.
If you don't know David, you would enjoy him.
