The Music of A Movement
Submitted by KetyE on Fri, 08/29/2008 - 16:53
I'm watching a Bob Dylan movie and just heard the most beautiful song from Joan Baez. That reminded me of a conversation I had not too long ago with some folks about past movements and the music surrounding them.
Thought I'd start to compile some here... please add your favorites too. Am thinking that once we've compiled a few perhaps we can add a tab to CrossLeft with these songs. :-) The sound track of our generation's struggle can include those who came before us after all.
Here's the first:
Joan Baez's "Virgin Mary (Had One Son)

Woody Guthrie's "Banks of Marble"
This Depression Era song is still popular -- our local Solidarity Singers will probably sing it again at today's labor activists' Labor Day Picnic just north of Albany.

Lyrics:
I've traveled 'round this country from shore to shining shore
It really made me wonder the things I heard and saw
I saw the weary farmer plowing sod and loam
l heard the auction hammer just a-knocking down his home
But the banks are made of marble with a guard at every door
and the vaults are stuffed with silver that the farmer sweated for
l saw the seaman standing idly by the shore
l heard the bosses saying, "Got no work for you no more"
But the banks are made of marble with a guard at every door
and the vaults are stuffed with silver that the seaman sweated for
I've seen the weary miner scrubbing coal dust from his back
I heard his children cryin' "Got no coal to heat the shack"
But the banks are made of marble with a guard at every door
and the vaults are stuffed with silver that the miner sweated for
I've seen the people working throughout this mighty land
And l prayed we'd get together and together make a stand
Then we might own those banks of marble with no guard at any door
and we would share those vaults of silver that we have sweated for
