Steven Waldman, author of "Founding Faith" and editor-in-chief of BeliefNet www.blog.beliefnet/stevenwaldman reported Tuesday Oct. 21st "Big Gains for Obama Among Weekly Churchgoers". He cites a recent Pew poll noting that Obama is making amazing gains amongst Catholic and Mainline Protestant churchgoers.
A month ago McCain had a 52-36% advantage amongst weekly mass attending Catholics. Now the poll shows it's tied at 45% each.
Amongst Mainline Protestants it was McCain 53% to 39% a month ago, now it Obama 47% to 44%.
So it looks like The Surge is working alright - for Obama!

Amazing news! "Born agains" split between Obama and McCain
Steve Waldman again cites Barna, "the premier pollster of the evangelical world", as revealing that persons who answer Barna's theological questions, (which they say then qualifies 48% of the nation as born agains, as opposed to 20-25% self proclaimed) favor McCain 45% Obama 43%, a statistical tie. 10% are undecided.
Point of reference. In 2004 Bush won 85% of their vote.
Most revealing to me is the age breakdown.
60+ McCain 47 Obama 37% - 10% lead
50's McCain 48 Obama 43% - 5% lead
20's and 30's Obama 51 McCain 39% - 15% lead
It appears, from these figures and those above, that the Obama campaign out reach programs to religious groups is working.
As I've noted in the past, we may have common ground with younger evangelicals on issues such as; global warming i.e. creation care, poverty eradication, immigration reform, health care for all and even evolution.
Gives me a real sense of hope.
