I just got my copy of The Left Hand of God by Michael Lerner and just started reading it. I will post some thoughts after I have gotten into it.

One of the things that really struck me while reading this book was a statistic towards the end of the book. According to Lerner 20,000 to 30,000 children die each day due to starvation and diseases related to malnutrition. I did some fact checking and his estimate appears conservative. How can we live so complacently while this is happening to our children? Where is the outrage? This fact alone IMO seems to prove there is something inherently wrong with our so-called civilization. There appears to be a movement by Western countries to cut poverty in half by 2015, but to me that is to little to late. Every child in the world should have the basic right to a proper diet and health care. Anything less than that is barbaric.

I finally finished reading it. I will probably have to read it at least once and possibly twice more to get a better understanding. As Jim stated, it makes your "head explode". I welcome any comments by others who have read it.

I am about half way through it. It is such a refreshing vision of what we could be. From hindsight, it seems that Obama has read it and used it to forge a new spirit in American Politics. Can we keep this spirit alive? Are Democrats and Progressives finally getting it? I'm sorry but those of you who claim to be social progressives and fiscal conservatives are not getting the real picture of what is really going on. You are either for the "bottom line" or you are for freeing the whole structure to allow for social and economic justice for all.

I don't know if everyone else has read it, but it made my head explode ! It could be a primer for faith based political activists.

I would love to have a discussion in here of how we could change our lives to reflect the issues in this book. I would like to see a discussion of how the average poor person could change their lives. Since I live below the poverty level, I shop at Walmart and think that the anti-Walmart movement is class motivated.

Give us poor people a real alternative.
