An international perspective....
Attached is a transcript from a recent speech given by Jim Wallace (the Australian one – see the end of the article for a bio) to the
The Centre for Independent Studies, one of Australia’s premier political think tanks.
The talk is entitled, “Christian Political Engagement: Time to Go Global. It acts as a call-to-arms for Christian’s around the world to engage in the global political sphere.
Jim Wallace is a good example of what the Christian right is like in Australia. They are not as fundamental as in the USA, however, they are still conservative.
The speech specifically addresses:
1) How the Church can be an instrument for spreading democracy and freedom globally
2) That the war against terrorism is a battle for hearts and minds - this is a battle the Church is well used to waging
3) How the Church can strengthen the hand of moderate Muslims against Islamic extremists by emphasising a shared commitment to transcendent values and pressing secular governments to tolerate religious difference
4) The role of the Church as an international voice speaking up for religious freedom in developed and developing countries alike
5) The importance of the Church speaking out against poverty, injustice and immorality in the West, demonstrating to critics of the West that its shortcomings do not go unnoticed or unprotested, even in the West
